Screen Repair & Replacement in Canaan & the Upper Valley

Rescreening and rebuilds for window screens, screen doors and porch panels — so you can open the windows in blackfly season.

A torn screen is one of those repairs that never quite makes it to the top of anyone's list, so it sits through a whole summer of blackflies and mosquitoes. It is also one of the fastest and cheapest things on this site to fix, which is exactly why it is worth calling about.

I rescreen window and door frames, rebuild frames that are past saving, and cut new panels for porches and three-season rooms.

What I Rescreen and Replace

  • Window screens — single, double-hung, slider and casement frames
  • Screen doors and the screen inserts in combination storm doors
  • Porch, deck and three-season room panels, including oversized custom panels
  • Sliding patio door screens, including rollers and tracks that no longer glide
  • Pet doors and low panels that take the most abuse
  • Frames that are bent, split at the corners or missing spline — rebuilt rather than patched

Rescreen or Rebuild?

If the frame is straight and the corners are tight, rescreening is the answer: old mesh and spline out, new mesh in, tensioned so it does not ripple. It is quick and it is the least expensive fix there is.

A frame that is racked out of square, cracked at the corner keys, or corroded through needs to be rebuilt instead — new frame stock cut to your opening. I will tell you which one you are looking at before you spend anything, and it is a five-second call once I see the frame.

Mesh Options Worth Knowing About

Standard fiberglass mesh is what most houses have and it is fine for most windows. But there are cases where it is the wrong choice, and swapping mesh type costs very little at the time of a rescreen:

  • Aluminum mesh — holds its shape better on big spans and does not sag on a hot porch
  • Pet-resistant mesh — heavy vinyl-coated polyester for doors and low panels a dog leans on
  • No-see-um mesh — a tighter weave that keeps out the small biting insects a standard screen lets straight through, which matters near water and in the woods
  • Solar / shade mesh — cuts heat and glare on south and west windows

Bring Them to Me or I Come to You

Screens are one of the few things that travel well. If you can pull the frames out, dropping them off and picking them up is the cheapest way to do it. If they are fixed panels, oversized porch sections, or you would rather not wrestle a second-story storm window, I will come to the house instead.

Questions

Common Questions

How fast is a screen repair? +

A rescreen is usually a same-visit job, and a batch of window screens can often be turned around in a day or two depending on what is already on the schedule.

Can you make a screen for an opening that has no screen at all? +

Yes. New frames get built to the opening, which is common on older porches and on windows where the original screens went missing years ago.

Do you fix the screen doors themselves, not just the mesh? +

Yes — sagging screen doors, closers, hinges and latches are carpentry, and that is the other half of what I do. See general carpentry.
