Light Earthwork in Canaan & the Upper Valley

Driveway grading, drainage, brush clearing and small digs around Canaan and the surrounding towns.

Plenty of property work sits in an awkward gap: too much for a shovel and a wheelbarrow, not enough to interest an excavation contractor with a lowbed and a crew. A washed-out driveway, a wet corner of the yard, a line of brush taking back the field edge, a dozen post holes.

That gap is what the tractor and the excavator are for. Machines small enough to get through a gate and work near a house without tearing up everything around them, big enough to move real material.

What Light Earthwork Covers

  • Driveway grading, crowning, pothole repair and gravel spreading
  • Drainage work — ditching, swales, culvert cleaning and water moving the wrong way
  • Brush clearing, overgrown lot cleanup and reclaiming a field edge
  • Post holes for fences, decks, mailboxes, sheds and gates
  • Small trenches for water lines, conduit and downspout drains
  • Rock and stump removal at a small scale, boulder moving and stone placement
  • Grading and site prep for sheds, patios, small slabs and gravel pads
  • Material moving — loam, gravel, mulch and fill placed where you need it

Mud Season, Frost and Timing

Timing matters more here than in most places. Frost is in the ground into April in an average year, and working saturated ground during mud season creates ruts and compaction that take a full season to recover from. Some jobs genuinely want to wait a few weeks, and I will say so instead of taking the deposit and making a mess.

Driveway work generally goes best once things dry out in late spring, and again in early fall before freeze-up. Drainage problems are the exception — the right time to look at those is while it is raining and you can actually see where the water goes.

Before Anything Gets Dug

Any dig gets Dig Safe called first — it is free, it is the law in New Hampshire, and the underground utilities on a rural property are almost never exactly where people remember them being. Septic tanks, leach fields, well lines and old buried oil lines get located before the bucket goes in the ground, not after.

What This Is Not

This is light earthwork, and being straight about the ceiling matters more than winning the job. Septic system installation, foundation excavation, road building, blasting and large-scale site work belong to a full excavation contractor with the equipment and the permits for it. If your project is over the line, I will tell you and point you toward someone who does that work.

Questions

Common Questions

How big is the equipment, and will it wreck my lawn? +

It is sized for residential property — it fits through a normal gate and works close to a house. Some marking in soft ground is unavoidable, but the machine is small enough that it is a lawn repair, not a reconstruction.

Can you fix my driveway potholes without a whole new driveway? +

In most cases, yes. Regrading and reworking existing material, with fresh gravel where it is thin, solves a lot of driveways that people assume need to be rebuilt.

Do you haul in gravel and loam, or do I have to arrange it? +

Either way works. Material can be delivered to the site by the pit and I place it, or for smaller quantities I can bring it. Say which you prefer when you call.
